The Benedictine abbey Altenburg is known as the "Baroque jewel of the Waldviertel region“ for its impressive frescoes by Paul Troger. In May 2006, it welcomed the opening of its "Garden of Religions“. Large religions of the world, such as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, are being shown in terms of garden design in the eyes of the Catholic church. Like this, the gardens invite for open discussion and dialogue just as well as recreation and peace. Another attraction of the abbey Altenburg is the "abbey under the abbey“, an excavation of the medieval foundations just below today’s Baroque building parts.
