The national park Danube-Floodplains protects one of the largest, still intact floodplains of Europe. SchlossORTH, the visitor centre of the national park, is a meeting and starting point for guided hiking tours and boat trips into the floodplains of the Danube. The exhibition "DonAUräume" provides visitors with an insight into the Danube floodplains from various perspectives. The floodplain-adventure area "Schlossinsel" invites visitors to discover and observe local plants & animals at different stops. The underwater observatory gives an impression into, below and above bayou waters. Many shy inhabitants of the flood plains can thus be watched. The national park provides the local terrapins, fish, shells, native colubrid species, frogs, fire-bellied toads and other insect species with a habitat and a protected zone for nesting.
