Just 35 minutes from Vienna, travel back into the time of the ancient Romans and become a witness to the re-enactment of the former Danube metropolis Carnuntum. Marvel at the archaeological treasures and excavations, the reconstructed Roman houses and take part in one of the large festivals that are organised throughout the course of the year: Find yourself back 2000 years ago! The reconstructed Roman gardens form a special highlight, as they give the visitors an impression of the Roman art of gardening. These gardens - the forerunners of the later Renaissance and Baroque gardens - only feature plants which can be dated back to the time of the Romans. The reconstructions rely on some plant findings in Carnuntum, as well as comparisons with the Roman gardens in Pompeji and Great Britain. In order to allow an authentic and ancient appearance, no hybrid plants were used, but rather the back breeding of modern plants. All the gardens also fulfil the demands of the "Nature in the garden".
